My co-professor Molly and I are happy to announce our FIRST EVER Healing Through Humor Comedy Showcase! And YOU are invited!
What is the Healing Through Humor Comedy Class?
In this class, my co-professor and I teach trauma survivors, grief survivors, and those with mental health challenges how to turn their experiences into funny stuff. We are both seasoned comedians with a decade of experience each.
Many times, I have found that audiences get nervous about this idea, but let me reassure you – we are not making fun of trauma, grief, or mental illness. We are taking our experiences and making fun of what our lives are like when dealing with these realities.
Why Use Humor?
For trauma survivors, humor is a coping mechanism that can get us through really difficult times. Why not refine these skills and make them work for us? Why not learn how to take our power back?
When I first took the stage with my jokes about PTSD, depression, anxiety, trauma, and grief, I spent the hour and a half before that sobbing in a bathroom stall. Why? My brain had heard what my voice was saying and suddenly understood that I would be delivering these jokes in front of people. I would be telling my story of surviving trauma.
But you know what? IT WAS MY CHOICE. And I did it. I was in charge of my story.
I asked my therapist about this experience and she told me that this was a Corrective Emotional Experience, where I was able to freak out, come to terms, and use my voice in a pivotal way.
In short, it was healing.
There are many ways for trauma and grief survivors to reclaim their power, and learning how to craft jokes from our worst experiences is one of them.
